ATV’s in our railyard. Used by? Those puppies move pretty fast, too!
This is really silly, but…
Brand new TXUX Aluminum coal cars. If they should accidently get some graffiti on them, would it be easier to clean off than the painted cars? I am thinking that it would be easier, but then I don’t have to do it, either.

The ATV’s are probably used by carmen for inspection and repairs. Their height is about right for inspecting running gear without bending over.
Mookie and I must view the same line, cause the new TXUX cars are so new coming through KC that their wheelsets aren’t even dirty yet. The bodies are so bright that can almost blind someone.
It would probably be harder to clean off any “donated paint scheme” unless the metal surface has been sealed. Prior to being sealed, the surface of any metal is a bit rough and porus (spelling?) and the surface probably would need to be sanded to remove any graffiti. If the RR’s are not cleaning / re-painting the graffiti off the cars now (which they are not), when these cars get “tagged”, they will stay that way.
And those ATV’s. Been used by car toads for years. For heavier stuff and two man jobs, expect to see a “Cushman” type vehicle or two ATV’s - one with a trailer.
The ATV’s the carknockers" use were supposed to have governors on them to restrict speed - oh well.
Restrict the speed to what?

Their Hondas live about a year before they get auctioned off…by then, they are not worth trying to repair…

Before the ATV’s were the secondhand US Mail Jeeps. Usually lost the fenders, glass and doors within a month[B)]
Still remember the CMO of our railroad priding himself on reducing manhours and “saving operating money”… The track department was ready to hand him a white cane. Roadmaster’s gang and B&B budgets for a year were blown all out of proportion building little roadcrossings and bridges everywhere around yards for “safety issues” (ie-convenience and shortcuts) raised by the mechanical departments [}:)][}:)][}:)]
I’ve seen some tagged aluminum gons, but not many in proportion to other types of cars. This may have to do with the fact that coal trains generally keep moving, or that they stay away from most urban areas (I still view this as an urban phenomenon).
As for the ATVs, we don’t have them in my yard, that I’m aware of. If they can fit between tracks and still leave room for somebody walking the track, it would be interesting to see how useful they’d be. What about winter?
The Gruman “jeeps”, or the Willys Jeep?
We have the Honda ATVs, and two Cushmans and a Kawasaki…the newer Cushman “belongs” to a senior carman, which means all he really does is drive around and get in the way of everyone else…although I did see him give a air test last week!
Now, if they gave me a three wheeler, I could really kick em fast!

I’ve seen some older UP hoppers that have the bare sides, seems like the sun begins to work on that graffiti after a few years with those sides getting really hot. It seems like it sticks better on painted cars.
At the UP yard closest to me, most carmen use ATVs. They also have a couple of Chevy S10 type pick-ups with a flatbed instead of a regular bed. The head of the mechanical department at that yard (I don’t know what his title is) drives a full size pick-up.
