I am going to Las Vegas for a conference in early November for a week. I am planning to spend most of my time walking around with my camera since I won’t have much money and don’t gamble anyhow.
I know UP runs through the middle of town and I had hoped to catch some fun there… but is there any other model railroad or railroad stuff I should make a point to see? I am planning to go to the Hoover Dam, but thats the only thing besides “walk around taking photos” I have on my list.
On you way to or from Boulder Dam, you could visit the Nevada Southern Railroad Museum in Boulder City, they have an operating (real) train line there. I didn’t know about it till I saw it on the way back from visiting the dam, but unfortunately we didn’t have time to stop. [sigh]
Clark County Museum (off Boulder Highway in extreme SE Henderson) has a UP 0-6-0 on display.
Just north of the west end of the Fremont Street Experience, several preserved passenger cars on display adjacent to the street. One was Buffalo Bill’s private car.
The Las Vegas Monorail - more or less parallels the Strip a block or so east.
The best smaller-scale hobby shop (of the three listed in MR) is Train Exchange - a real old-fashioned LHS.
Also Hobbytown USA on Sahara and Decatur has a good selection of all gauges…Train Exchange has had it’s Lionel inventory eaten away quite a bit as of last week when I visited there…
There is a new shop on West Durango and Flamingo area that I want to check out on my next visit…I heard it had a great inventory.
Thanks for all the feedback, I will look forward to checking out those hobby shops and will do my best to check out the railroad museums. I will have limited time to travel outside of Las Vegas but hope to rent a car at least one day and check out the Hoover Dam plus whatever else I can find. I am saving the Grand Canyon for when I can do it justice.
