You mean such an engine?
here’s an url, perhaps you’re lucky http://www.enginetender.com/395m.htm

To anyone who has built one :
can you make it a phase I?
what kind of drive does it have? hopefully its a better runner than the bachmann
Try this site out.
After two Bachmann 44ton with awfull noise I found a Keystone in a small Swiss shop and bought it.
Forget it! it’s worse…
wow
How could be worse than the backmann? I have both versions of the bachmann. The single motor is a little better but not by much. I thought since it has a sagami with nwsl gears it would be a decent runner.
Wolfgang, I’m fascinated by your little 44 tonner. The sound is great and it runs so smooth! Can you tell us all about it? I love the R2D2 sounds at the end. [:D]
I changed the motor with a can motor. Also, I’ve made a new chassis frame from brass sheet to get more space above the motor. There’s the ESU loksound decoder. For lights I used white LEDs. You can see the way for the beacon light on my website. We, five friends, have bought the programmer. One of us is the guru, he likes Star Wars.

My June 2007 copy of Scale Rails arrived today, along with a nicely done write-up by Wolfgang on how he added DCC and sound to his 44-tonner.
Thanks, Wolfgang, it’s an interesting and informative article!
I have not yet received my issue. It’s a long way to Germany, sometime by row boat. [:)]
But in the last time I had opened this little critter again, with “sweat and blood”. I made a picture update:
You see my home made chassis. This brought the clearance I needed for ESU loksound decoder.

Wolfgang,
Thanks for sharing the information on your 44 tonner. You’ve done a heck of a good job! [tup]
Hey Wolfgang, if I may, I’ve got a question about those RDCs on your wonderful little website there.
First off, they look like the old Athearn RDCs and i was wondering if the ones on your layout have been converted to DCC and if so, how’d you do it?
Thanks!
~METRO
I’ve heard others complain about the running quality of the Keystone and wonder if there were multiple runs. I bought two kits just before they were discontinued. Mine arrived with the basic frame, motor, wheels and gear towers already assembled and run awesomely. I later bought two assembled and painted ones from E-Bay that did show much wear but were not as smooth and quiet. Better than Bachmann but I ahve never understood the bashing of the Bachmann model, I have two that run well for plastic.
METRO,
a friend made a total new driving unit:
And now one of my both Athearn RDCs has got an ESU loksound decoder, the other has still a simple decoder, without sound only light.
steamnut,
with DCC you have no problem to give two different engines the same speed curve. Only - time consuming - programming. You can see my 44-ton running in my videos.
