Has any manufacturer announced plans for HO Monon F3 units with DCC/sound in red/gray passenger livery? BLI/PCM has cancelled all their F3 plans/production, probably due to MTH lawsuit. Maybe MTH HO?
Thanks.

Intermountain has F3 units with sound. I have a number of these units and in m opinion these units are the best on the market at present. They are not the red and grey but I would suggest you contact them to see if that colour scheme will be available.
When did Monon change from the black/tan colors to the red/white 'Hoosier" scheme?
It’s the other way around. And it was around the time they dieselied, the red grey (WABASH, not IU) wzs passenger, the black Gold (DEPAUW) scheme was freight. Tpward what was I think the 60s, they dropped the red/grey and stuck with the black/gold and what they had on hand in red/grey until they dropped passenger service altogether.
EDIT: Athearn had a pair, but their gone now. You might be able to get away with re-numbering if you can find them
Actually, the colors were gray and red (“cream and crimson”) for Indiana University (on the Monon at Bloomington) and gold and black (“old gold and black”) for Purdue (in Lafayette).
Uh, not according to what I’[ve read from Monon Tech. Hist. Soc. and the book Monon Route. According, the only IU and Purdue scheme engines were a pair of steam locos done up especially for the schools, with emblems up fron and on the sides
What’s really interesting is that the Monon passenger colors for both prototypes and models seem most like the scarlet and gray of Ohio State. Was Buckeye influence involved?
Gary and Stephen Dolzall’s “Monon - The Hoosier Line” list the cited diesel schemes as university-inspired. Page 217 of Hilton’s book describes the grey and red as “the passenger livery of Indiana University colors”.
I’m referring to where they took the ideas for the second round of diesel colors (after the simple black and white), not saying that the colors had any more significance than that the passenger colors were drawn from IU’s colors and the freight colors were drawn from Purdue’s.
I am too. Now, I get kinda crazy trying to right the misconception, but they DIDN"T draw from Purdue and IU directly. Wabash and DePauw were the sources because Monon had door-to-door service to them first ( I don’t know if IU had a track, but Monon did cut right through the Pudue campus). Having a scheme that reflected 2 of your major on-line schools instead of one, probably made sense to them, but it wasn’t solely IU Purdue.
Nope. No Buckeye. Except for Louisville, Monon was all Hoosier. They were a North/South line, and had NO ties to Ohio. This would kill them in the World Wars, when they didn’t get more than peanuts share of the troop movements and the USRA decided they didn’t need much because of it. The Wabash (sigh…IU as well) colors are red/cream, but cream shows dirt badly, grey is better at hiding it.
Funny this post came up when it did. I was going to ask some what the same question.
I have 2 sets of Proto 1000’s in black and gold F3’s. I would like another B unit or a A B set as they where sold originally. Any idea where I can find some left from the last run? Color match is a big deal to me.
If anyone here have ones they don’t run PM me.

I really thing that Notre Dame had the Color influance in the Monon Passenger Scheme!!! HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEEHEHE
Acutally it was influanced by IU and Purdue both of its mainlines running to Bloomington and the other being in Lafayette.

Update to 2 year old post.
Just pre-ordered Athearn Genesis G22618 dcc/sound set Monon F3AB set in red/gray passenger livery for $299.99 from Wholesale Trains. ETA January 2012 (for now).
Athearn also announced black/gold livery in dc and dcc/sound per April newsletter:
http://www.athearn.com/newsletter/041911/01_Gen_F3_Monon_041911.pdf
Another update. Athearn just confirmed that their Genesis Monon F3 red/gray passenger livery locos ETA has slipped to December 2012. Apparaently the black/gold livery ETA is still December 2011. I won’t hold my breath for either.
I am modeling Dearborn Station in Chicago, and I have locos and passenger cars for six of the seven roads that used Dearborn Station - - Santa Fe, Erie, Wabash, Grand Trunk Western, Chicago & Eastern Illinois, Chicago & Western Indiana.
But, no Monon. Trying to find Monon locos or passenger cars is an impossible task. No one makes them. You can find obscure road names all the time, but no Monon. It is a shame.
Rich
Revised update. Athearn just advised me that December 2012 delivery date on Monon red/gray passenger F3s was wrong on their part. ETA is now March 2012. I’ll only believe that when I see them delivered to my doorstep.
I assume you meant an ETA of March 2012?
What about matching Monon passenger cars? Where are you going to get those?
Rich
Sorry about the mistake, I edited to March 2012. I already have some old IHC Monon passenger cars that I’ll use with the locos if they ever arrive. I think I’ll stop updating now since I just seem to compound the error(s).
Hey, don’t stop now. Keep posting. Interested in the eventual availability date.
Rich
Dave, it looks like March 20, 2012 is the new delivery date on the Athearn locos.
What, if anything did you do to modify the IHC passenger cars?
Specifically, did you add weights, replace the trucks and/or wheels, add body mounted couplers?
Rich
Hi Rich,
I buy IHC when I can’t get the road livery I want in a better passenger car. Painting is just not one of my talents or interests.
I modify most of my IHC passenger cars as follows:
McHenry snap-in truck mounted knuckle couplers (I have some Kadee body mount conversion sets but just haven’t gotten around to installing them). Also truck mounted couplers do better on tighter curves my grandson likes for his temporary intricate EZ track floor layouts.
Intermountain 36" insulated wheelsets (sometimes use 38" if couplers ride too low according to Kadee coupler height gauge, then have to cut off plastic brake shoes on trucks to keep from binding) - Also use Micromark truck tuner to ream plastic truck bearings when necessary for free wheeling;
Add weight to @NMRA standard using small lead birdshot glued in recesses of car floors. I’ve got a lifetime supply of birdshot I bought in bulk from a local gunshop several years ago.
