does anyone (especially if living near them) if the following shortlines Pecos Valley Southern, Central Montana Rail, New Hampshire & Vermont, Twin States, Central California Traction, Indiana Southwestern, Iowa Northwestern, among others are still operating or have they bit the dust?
NH&V is dead.
Far as I know, the CCT is alive and very well.
The Indiana and Southwestern is still alive
CCT is still around. The last I heard, the section between Lodi and Sacramento was out of use (or abandoned) and UP was switching the customers in Sacramento. CCT also now switches the Port of Stockton.
By the way, try doing a search for the shortlines, some of them may have websites. I know CCT has one.

Did a little research of my own on the Iowa Northwestern, and found a website

CCT’s line to Sacramento from Lodi is still there. Its just out of service. CCT is retaining it for future use.
