Here’s another one who takes the summer off. The only time I was in the train room this summer was to grab a tool I needed.
The exception to that was the weekend of the 4th of July. My youngest grandson has a fascination with trains akin to mine was here for a week. We spent a lot of time in the basement together. What a wonderful week!
As an interesting footnote, last night I went back to the train room for the first time since that weekend.
As an indictment of my inertia of the past year, I got more accomplished this summer than pehaps the last two winters combined. I painted and decaled several pieces of rolling stock, made a bunch of trees from materials harvested from a couple of shrubs last winter, scenicked a stretch of the layout, and completed a few building kits. I also stocked up on some supplies for the coming season (there was a brief window in the spring where good stuff was available on Ebay for bargain prices).
This is something new to me, taking the summer off, off from what? don’t understand that a hobby has seasons, is there something I haven’t been told about model railroading? after all, this is an inside hobby. Another new mystery to add to the idiosyncracies of the hobby.
Count me as someone who didn’t touch his layout since the beginning of June.
The warm weather brings up too many other things to do that simply takes up the time I’d usually be inside working on my layout. I think it’s a needed break, allowing me to return to unfinished layout projects with a fresh perspective. Helps keep burnout in check.
Well let’s see. I have a place near Munising in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan and am modeling that area. If you have ever been there you know how beautiful it is so I was there to fish, take pictures and just generally relax from the frantic pace of retirement. But over the weekend, it was a high of 39 with snow and rain - so the place is closed up and I am back to modeling after a few months away. Ah yes, winter is coming…
I took off the summer, Did some remodeling on my house, (hired it done) Rebuilt the front porch, added a big covered deck and replaced a lot of windows. I have been getting the train fever again and did run some trains a little last night, had to clean the tracks really good there hasn’t been a train running sence March, Looking forward to getting some work done.
Unfortunately I’ve taken the last year off. Move, new job, new house, still haven’t unpacked all the boxes. I did save the layout and hope to re-assemble it this fall, although we might have an early ski season… In the meantime,I’m crashing planes.
Did get a Veranda Turbine though. Who makes sound for them?
I was too busy trying to get my new business off the ground to do much on the layout. Now with all the rain and humidity we’ve had, I’m pulling my hair out with all the track and derailment problems I’m having.
yeah i take the summers off but right about now in back on track fall is is like my jumpping off point i see all the trees changing and i cant help but model them and you know you have time comming up winter just isnt that much fun to be out in
