Any Plans for a Digital edition of the 75-Year MR Collection DVD

I recently purchased the 75-year collection DVD. I’m a subscriber and get MR in physical and digital form. I wonder if there are any plans to release a digital version of the DVD material, that we could load onto an ipad or other tablet.

Yes, maybe sold on either a flash drive or a Sd card! It is only 25 Gb, so not too hard to do.

I was thinking of something you could read in an ipad. They have neither sd cards or usb ports for flash drives. But if there was a way to load it onto the ipad, that would be great. The guys at MR are clever. I’m sure they could come up with something.

Maybe an online access approach to access / search all old stuff (that’s digitized). Kinda like Video Plus. I may not pony up $199 for the DVDs but might pony up a moderate amount per year for access to all the former stuff. I’ll bet Kalmbach has considered this.

Oh God… why would you want to own something that is so restrictive? But I agree that a online access would also work.

As far as reading periodicals and manuals, etc. Ipads are only restrictive to people that don’t own one. You can easily drop a pdf into Itunes to load onto the Ipad. Or you can simply download from the internet what you would like to read. (MRH magazine for example)#### I downloaded the manuals for my autos so when I’m reading codes or need information, my Ipad is sitting on my workbench, I don’t really feel that I’m restricted but to each his own. The concern for MR is piracy, although they should be able to distribute it like they do the mag thru Zinio.

Yeah, but dropping that file through itunes requires more effort than hot swapping a USB drive. Especially now that they make thumb drives for the micro USB ports on Android devices.

I don’t use itunes to copy PDFs to my iPad. Or my magazines. Removeable media of all types is another thing going the way of the dodo. USB flash drives are maybe the one exception, but that’s because at least for now, computers always have a USB port for attaching accessories. Most laptops no longer come with CD or DVD drives. Why? Because software installs are done via the network, and movies are all digital as well.

That’s the only problem I have with the 75 year collection, the way they chose to implement DRM means it can only be used on a Windows or Mac PC. You can print articles and load them on another device - I have a few construction projects in my ipad that was, it’s nice to have a zoomable set of plans right at hand - they zoom to larger than original magazine side so you can see the details. But you can load entire issues. Granted loading ALL of it would fill my iPad, but a couple of years at a time would make a much more convenient reading platform than sitting at my desktop.

Okay, in your world, a couple clicks of a mouse is considered “effort”. [sigh]

I don’t get Model Railroader, Classic Trains, Trains, Hot Rod, Car and Driver, Model Railroad Hobbyist or Model Railroad Craftsman by plugging my Ipad (or Galaxy) into anything, I get it by downloading from the net, no plug required.

All of my mags are on the cloud, my methods and chosen supplier are far from “limited”, despite what the uniformed want to believe.

Enjoy your Android. [swg]

Geared Steam, could you supply a link or two? I’d like to check out how the cloud magazine thing works but wouldn’t know where to look or start.

Thanks, Jim

Well, the Zinio service MR uses is one of them. With the Zinio app, the magazines are downloaded directly to your device within the app, regalrdless of platform. There are other magazine providers besides Zinio, and they all work pretty much the same. MRH, I download directly to my iPad from their web site. Any number of multiplatform cloud services like Box or Dropbox would also allow you to access files on all of your devices from one location.

Yes, I subscribe to both the paper and digital edition of MR, and Zinio “just works” no fuss, no hassles. And I love being able to zoom in on photos.

I’m not sure what search facilities are available with Zinio, but something like that would be great. (Of course, at a discount for those of us who’ve already stumped up for the DVD [:D]). But the ability to do a search across all the content is highly desirable, so I could find all the references to “Gorre and Daphetid” for instance.

Apple devices get their own “cloud” to for backups when you connect to ITunes and sync. You also have a choice of backing up to your harddrive.

As Randy mentioned, for other cloud options, here is an article concerning the different companies offering Cloud services.

Geared Steam. Thanks! Sorry for the very late reply-family medical stuff. Since you wrote, I downloaded the newest version of Itunes and the cloud feature is drag and drop so easy peasy! Thanks again for your very helpful response.

Somehow, this has become a thread about the pros and cons of iPads vs. Android etc. I was just wondering (and would be delighted if someone from Kalmbach would weigh in here) if there is any likelihood of a digital version of the DVDs.
