Any recommended Cumbres & Toltec videos or books?

Hoping to visit the Cumbres and Toltec in the spring. I’m wondering if anyone can recommend a book or DVD on the line to get more familiar with the area before the visit.

Also, I’m wondering if anyone knows the reason for the odd track arrangement (kind of a reverse loop / balloon track) at Lava on the C&T? I’m guessing that it has something to do w/ engine servicing, but can’t figure out how that track layout helps.

Thx much,

Doublestack;

I would suggest that you start here at the “You Tube” for some video results on the C&TS:

and then there is their own website(C&TSRR) which is pretty interesting:

Thanks very much for all of the links. That will give me some interesting research to pour over during the cold months.

Just remember that spring comes late in the high country. IIRC they opened for Memorial Day weekend this year. This picture is from the following week:

Nope! Just GO THERE! It is truly awesome!

I stayed at “THE” motel in Antonito and sallied forth. Very few ‘foamers’ and touristas in town. Cool place and great food! Right at the end of ‘standard gauge’, with yard and engine facilities. I do wish they would drop the “Scenic” from their name, but I guess it sells. Try a Mike Walker “SVP Atlas” for the area. Doesn’t show roads, but everything else is what you need. As noted, spring might not be the best time to visit…
