I’m an N scaler, and model the Western Pacific of the 1920s and 30s once in a while. I also hope to add a Kato made F-7 ABBA and California Zephyr set to my collection one of these days, as well as a few more modern diesels and pieces of rolling stock of its sell out era…
I model the Sacramento Northern, which was owned by the WP, in HO scale, specifically in the area around Sacramento in the 1950s/60s. There are still a few signs of the WP’s existence around here, the main one being the “Old Spaghetti Factory” restaurant on J Street that used to be the WP passenger depot. I use one WP S1 and a GP-7 in Zephyr scheme as borrowed power from the parent company, and a couple of SN-owned 44 tonners, one in Zephyr and one in the original black with orange safety stripes. I eventually plan on backdating my layout by a decade, by putting up trolley poles and installing overhead wire so I can run juice jacks and maybe even streetcars.
If you could get a picture of that “Old Spaghetti Factory” for me. That would be really neat to see.
I am a fan of more of the line more the the railroad. The Feather River is an amazing route and I’m not sure off the top of my head, but there was a layout featured in MR’s 60th aniversery magazine that was WP in the last stages before UP step in.
How about a semi fan? Actually I model the GN circa '47-‘50. I am doing research and building a set of Free-mo modules of the Interchange at Beiber, CA. I am really taken with the highline and recommend the Pentrex DVD "Runnin’ the Highline". When I entered the rebirth of activity in the hobby 10 years ago after a lapse of 15 or so years, I was doing a fixed layout around a bedroom with a “Keddie Wye” at the top of the helix between levels. That was before I decided I love big curves and turnouts with a healthy dose of operation. The layout demised and I have been working on modules. jc5729
I’m more into urban railroading and electrics, as well as being a big booster of Sacramento, so that’s where most of my interests lie. For a long while we had SP, WP, SN, Central California Traction, plus the local PG&E streetcars running through, so I tend to like all of the above. The Feather River Route is nice, although it’s a relatively small portion of the whole WP system.
Here are some shots of the Sacramento depot when it was still the WP depot:
I was in Ho in the 60s then started to work for WP here in Oroville, of which working and the same hobbie was a bit much… Returning to HO a few years back, decided on a small bookshelf yard layout would be a neat retirment activity. Found that what I really liked was building it, which has expanded to an around the room, two level, two yard layout with a helix
Im currently scenicing my Keddie Wye and should have is done in a few weeks…
Worked for WP untill they moved to Stockton in 69, went to SP in Sacramento and returned from furloughed statis to work for MOW in Oroville, UP came on line and I was bumped up the canyon and also worked in Nevada (The place where jack rabbits jump in front of cars, they dont like it there either) then quit for a better local job.
So Yes you might say Im a WP fan, perhaps maybe still employed there…but when that company with those UGKIE Yellow engines bought it out.LOL
So if you guys have any pictures of the Oroville roundhouse let me know…John
