Anybody have locomotive from IHC?

I have been thinking about buying one off the internet. How are their locomotives compared to Athearn? What’s the detail like and how do they run? All comments welcome! Here’s the locomotive >>> http://discounttrainsonline.com/dto/item348-24003.html

This topic was brought up a couple of weeks ago, so look back through the forum for that discussion.

I have several of the IHC steam engines and they all run very smoothly and were fairly easy to install DCC decoders into. They don’t have as much detail as better and more pricey models.

Comments on the earlier discussion of IHC products was that their diesel models were not very good runners, so you really need to dig back into the forum for that message thread and review it.

I know what you are talking about. When I search for the stuff like that i get a lot of “junk” posts and nothing on the subject of what I was looking for. Is there a better way to search the forum?

There is a big difference between their “regular” engines and their Premier Series. I have four of their Premier Series and they all run great. The non-premier isn’t so great but it works. The one you are looking at is one of the non-premier.

Check out Trainworld and their closeouts of the Proto Series. Good trains for very reasonable prices.

When you mean search the forums are you talking about the “search engine,” or just going through the thread headings?

I just sent a recent IHC post to the top of the page.

I have a 2-6-0 CofG steam locomotive. It runs fairly well, thought not very smoothly or slow. It is about the same as Athearn to me.

As far as I know, some of their models are based on older models once made by other companies, such as the SD35. Some of these aren’t very good looking, at least not by modern standards. I don’t know how well they run.

I finally bit the bullet and ordered one of IHC’s 4-6-4 Hudsons in C&NW livery. I’m hoping that it will be a fine addition to my paltry collection of locos. And, with the above comment about ease of installing a decoder, that will come next.

I don’t use diesels, so I can’t comment on the loco in the ad you posted, but I do have one of the IHC USRA heavy Mountains, and it’s a good runner and a good puller. Quiet and smooth. The detail isn’t up to the Spectrum Heavy Mountain, but it’s a good basic loco that lends itself to super-detailing if you want.
