i bought a bunch of lionel o gauge track when i was ten or so an now i have decided to switch to atlas O track. i don’t really have any space for the old track and i need some money so i am going to sell it. if you could give me a few places in the chicago area that would be great thanks.

3 rail track isn’t worth much these days…so don’t plan on buying a Corvette with the profits.

A lot of nice layuots are built with it, as you’ll see here sometimes on the forum. You might check at the hobby shops just to see if they know someone who needs it. I bought a lot of lionel track as well. Some rusted and some didn’t. I tried to sell the unrusted track to a friend and he didn’t want it. I had to throw it all away because I couldn’t even give it away for free. Old lionel tubular track is only good for starter sets and kid’s sets. Everyone wants gargraves, and atlas o track. My sugestion is to find another ten year old kid and give the track to him.
When I used to do train shows regularly people would put masking tape on bundles of 5 tracks and keep it in a box under the table… Usually asking $1 per pack. It sold when somebody who needed it saw it. That’s about the sum of the used track business as it existed then.
The best advise is keep it. As you expand your layout you’ll find uses for it in tunnels and other hidden areas and save money on the “designer tracks”
I use only O27 track; but I avoid the standard straight sections, which are not quite 9 inches long. Most of the problems with track resistance develop at the joints; so you can minimize the problem by using longer sections, like K-Line’s 36-inch piece or Lionel’s 35 3/8-inch piece, cutting them shorter as needed. I don’t have a problem with resistance since I solder all my joints anyway; but the benefit I get is fewer solder joints to make.
I am building a train layout now with regular Lionel O tubular track. I have a lot of it that I have bought, and I will surely have some left over. I was wondering what I will do with it, and now i see I am not the only one.
People should use whatever they want to use, so don’t anyone be offended by this, but I specifically decided not to use Gargraves, Ross, or Atlas track. I am using Ross switches. I like how easily I can connect and re-arrange Lionel tubular track and I like how easily I can attach lock-ons and connect power to the track. I like that both outer rails are already connected to each other electically, and I don’t need to do that, nor do I need to solder jumpers from one section of track to another, etc. Wow, that would be a royal pain if I had to do that. I’m not a roadbed person. Just not for me. I will ballast my tacks, but am not into the FasTrack, or Ross roadbed, or any of that stuff. Just looks too much like plastic for me, but to each his own. Everyone can make those decisions for themselves for their own layouts. What I like might not be what someone else likes, etc.
I do have one good use for un-needed Lionel tubular track: It is great for defending your home. If a burglar ever comes in, I am going to hand him a few pieces of Lionel track and tell him to put it together. That should ensure that he will wind up severely wounded, bleeding, in a lot of pain, and generally unable to do me any harm while I await the arrival of the Police. Doctor says my own wounds from assembling my layout should all heal up nicely after a few operations to re-install an eyeball, re-attach some tendons and that thumb that got severed, a little plastic surgery on the scars… OK, it is not the easiest stuff to work with, but it makes a nice layout.
Try donating to a childrens hospital or to Good will.
