I am modeling the Tonopah and Tidewater RR, a pre WW1 southern Nevada desert mining railroad. I was curious whether there are other modelers out there modeling Nevada railroads? UP, SP, WP, V&T or the shortlines? What era? Any websites? Thanks, Nevin
Hi, Nevin,
I’m rather surprised that we haven’t had a platoon of V&T modelers come forward…
If I wasn’t so deeply involved in my long-time prototype, I’d give the Six Companies (Hoover Dam) rail operations a shot. There are a few decent photos and some track diagrams available, plus a roster - and all of the above-water ROW is still evident.
My favorite part would have to be the battery locos that operated between Lomix (site now submerged) and the base of the dam - and recharged from third rail while passing through the 1600 foot tunnel between termini.

Six Companies would make a very interesting model railroad with steep grades, big shays and leased UP steam. It connected to the UP Boulder City branch and that would make an neat railroad too. A model of Hoover dam might be a bit much! - Nevin
I guess there really isn’t anyone on this forum modeling Nevada railroads. I am surprised as I would expect the V&T or the WP to be quite popular. - Nevin
I’m not so sure there is nobody else - there are many, many lurkers on the forum. Only a very small percentage of the readers actually post.
I prefer a slightly wetter region - which is why I model coastal Oregon in 1900. But I have enjoyed the Lake Tahoe area in particular. And the railfanning along I-80 from Donner Pass all the way across Nevada is quite spectacular, as are the museums and trains at Virginia City.
yours in having fun
