I just bought 2 ALCO C855’s on E-Bay, One is Overland, the other, ALCO (Confused because both ARE Alcos but only one is an “ALCO Squared”). Well I was only able to find A-Units but what I really want is to complete my ALCO C855 Trio (Only 3 were built, two A’s and one B). I have 2 A’s and now I want a B to go with them.
I know one thing that is hard would be building the frame with the four trucks and Span-Bolsters. I think I have a handle on building the frame (The fuel Tank has me scratching my head though) as I purchased an EXCELLENT scratchbuilt/kitbashed U50 on E-Bay so I am going to use that builders approach as well as that of Factory built Turbines to build the running gear. I really don’t care if it is powered or not.
For the hoods I am thinking of “Experimenting” with “Low-End” Plastic Alco Centuries. If I feel I can do a good job I might consider springing for hoods from Atlas or Stewart Centuries, but the Lima/MRC/Riverassi C420 might work as well. Any Ideas?
Sorry if I am stating the obvious but if you could get your hands on another A unit that would give you matching running gear for all three units and just a matter of kit bashing the body to suit. In saying this I have no idea of the availability or price of these things. Otherwise I would say you’re on the right track with the U50 option.
I thought about that but I really want to have 2 cabs and a Booster, also I am “Afraid” to paint them!!! I am pretty sure that a B-Unit was built in Brass at one time or another (I saw one on E-bay a year or so ago!) but I am not sure if I will ever find one!!! Thanks for your vote of confidence in my strategy.
Yes they were also made in brass by Alco. I have seen only a few over the years. I just saw this set on Ebay a few monhs ago. I didn’t know OMI made a C-855. I only thoguth Alco did those. You have to post a few pics or send me some of the Overland model. The A unit I have seen went for around $650.00. The A&B unit shown went for $1125.00. It was a 'BUY IT NOW" and someone snatched it up ASAP. I do have other pics of the model below. But please, how about some OMI pics of that beast [:D]
