I’ve read on these forums about people touring the roundhouse at the UP yard in Cheyenne, WY. I know it is home of steam service of UP. My family is planning a vacation through there in July. I have searched online and found lots of info about touring the old station as well as info about the roundhouse, but nothing about getting tours. Has anyone here toured the roundhouse, and do you know how to set up a tour? Any and all info is appreciated.
I’ve heard about this, too, though I’ve never done anything about it. However, last time I was in Cheyenne for Frontier Days, Lynn Nystrom took all of the railfans inside so they could see #3985.
You might start by seeing if you could find someone in the UP Steam program to talk to. Also, the Frontier Days trains should be running (behind a double-headed 844 and 3985?) on the weekend of July 19th. If you’re in town around that time in July, you might have a good chance to get inside the roundhouse.
I was home on leave from the army and a couple of decided to go to cheyenne for a day of railfanning we managed to get passes into the roundhouse and shops took pictures of the 844 and the 3985 was under restoration at the time. Got a couple of shots from inside the cab of a 6900 and a couple of other units But this was back in 1985 or 1986 Great time Larry
You can tour the Roundhouse and shops. You just need to give them a call and let them know you are coming. While I don’t have the number anymore, if you stop at the Depot and ask, they should be able to help you out.
UP had an incident probably 15 yrs or more ago w/ some visitors getting hurt during a visit. I had asked at the depot but no one knew who to contact. I’d try to make a contact before the visit.
