Anyone know anyting about Jim Beam Raillroad Decanters?

A friend of mind has had a couple come into his possession from an elderly relative and wants to know if they’re worth anything. They’re still in their original boxes and haven’t been unsealed.

You might want to check Ebay, but I dont think you will be overwhelmed with value. I have the complete train with track. None of the seals have been broken yet, waiting for one of those real bad train days. Now if you would want to trade for a Legacy diesel engine, I would even include a shot glass.

Lets see if unsealed that makes the burbon about another 30 years old lol no really some bring a good price but you can get into trouble if you try to sell full and ship somewhere. The best if your trying to sell them is to empty them but do your best to keep the seal undamaged as best you can.

Depends what he has. as mentioned above ebay is about your best source to check. I use to have most of the pieces to them including track. Wish i still did but no room for them now lol

Trust me, if that bourbon was truly aged another 30 years, you wouldn’t see me posting about it here!!! [:P]

They are nice, I’ve have a few.

Checking E-Bay (“Jim Beam Train” under “Collectible”) they seem to bring about $10 each EMPTY - $50 FULL. That makes it an expensive $40 drink if you empty it.

I don’t think any State or Fed is interested enough to spend time stopping two $50 collectible bottles, nor does UPS get that amount of detail when you ship.

Regarding Ebay sales/auctions, I believe there is a prohibition on alcohol or edible products. Containers would have to be empty. Also, I was told by a liquor store owner several years ago that if I wanted to preserve the contents of such items, one should seal the cap area with wax. Apparently, the alcohol can evaporate over time, leaving you with an empty container that’s never been opened. I have a '57 chevy filled with Jim Beam. Have not checked it for a while (and I neglected to follow his advice) to see if there’s still something to drink in it.

It’s true that Ebay does have a policy prohibiting the sale of alcohol. Looking through their policy pages, however, I found the following that seems to apply in this case

"

We will permit sales of unopened collectible containers that still contain alcohol as long as each of the following conditions are met and stated verbatim in the listing:

  • The value of the item is in the collectible container, not its contents.*

  • The container has not been opened and any incidental contents are not intended for consumption.

  • The item is not available at any retail outlet, and the container has a value that substantially exceeds the current retail price of the alcohol in the container.

  • The seller will take all appropriate steps to ensure that the buyer is of lawful age in the buyer and seller’s jurisdiction (generally 21 years of age).

  • Buyers and sellers both ensure that the sale complies with all applicable laws and shipping regulations."
