I would like to model N&W diesels on my model train layout and need to see the color schemes.

I would think a good bet would be to talk to the people at the Norfolk and Western Historical Society at http://www.nwhs.org/

Check your library-ours has “N & W, Diesels Last Conquest” or something near that that has alot on the early diesels-some in color if I remember correctly but don’t expect much-solid maroon,solid med-dark blue, and of course solid black -somewhere in the 60’s, they really got wild and left the & out of N & W-don’t get me wrong I love N & W/NS but they certainly didn’t spend too much time or money on the paint schemes-maybe that’s why they are still around today
When the N&W ceased using steam on the passenger trains around 1858 they leased ACL and RF&P E-units originally. The RF&P E-8A’s were left in their colors and had the name Norfolk & Western spelled out on the lower blue bands. The same with the ACL E’s…purple & silver with the N&W name in the lower purple band.
When the N&W’s passenger GP-9’s arrived they were painted in a matching scheme to the passenger cars. They were Tuscan Red from the bottom of the hoods to the tops including the cabs with black from the walkways/frames down including the trucks. Lettering was dulux gold including a stripe along the top of the frame. While nothing flashy compared to SP Daylights and such they were very attractive and really looked great pulling the trains.
After 1963 they were painted the same except Pevler Blue replaced the TR on the hoods.
