Anyone need a cool tip?

Hi all. I had a guy on another (non-train) forum tell me about this. For tunnel liners, wrinkle heavy aluminum foil and spread it back out flat. Use cheap black, grey, dark brown spray paint to color it and then shape it for use as tunnel liner material. When finished, it looks like blasted rock. I’m thinking about going back with some more grey. The first trys came out a little dark. What do ya’ll think of the color?

Here’s a close up. There’s a couple of spots that need touch up but you get the idea.

And a shot of another tunnel with a GP30 for effect…

Neat tip, i try to blend the colour lighter towards the tunnel enterance, the tunnel portal is very convincing[tup]

Hey, that IS cool! Thanx.

Been there, did that! What is old is new again!

Aluminum foil can also be used to make molds for casting rock faces, tunnel entrances, etc. Crinkile it up, make the mold shape and pour in some of your favorite plaster compound, and ther you are. I made some rock tunnel portals this way, by making the foil into a “U” shape then pouring in the plaster.

Cool! Thanks. I’m making two tunnels right now and was wondering what to do for the liner.Good tip on the rock casting too. I just made two portals out of card board glued together with a hot glue gun and I’m coating them with newspaper dipped in plaster.
The other way sounds way easier.

I’m glad you guys like it. Maybe it’ll show up on some other layouts soon. [;)]

Steve, that’s what I’m thinking on the colors. A little lighter earth shade on the sides and a darker roof to represent soot.

That is a great idea and easy method. I have several more to do and I will try it.
Don’t laugh, but on my first layout in the late 60’s I had a mountain that I built using a 12 gauge wire frame and covered with crumpled Aluminum foil. When it was painted, it wasn’t half bad.

What else could I have done in Bangkok, Thailand.[:D]

you can be sure it will be on mine…Nice work!!![:D]
