I have a couple of Bachmann decapods that I an thinking about adding sound. They have a pretty small tender. Has anyone done this and what decoder did you use? Would the MRC brilliance decoders fit and are they any good? - Nevin
Nevin,
I have installed the Soundtraxx drop-in sound decoders in two Decapods and can report they work well and sound great. Unfortunately, Soundtraxx no longer makes the decoder, at least according to their website. However, they are still available from Internet Trains for $63.75 which is a great deal - I paid over $100 for each of mine. Here is the link:

Hope this helps!
Are you saying that the soundtraxx Bachmann 2-8-0 decoder drops into the 2-10-0 tender without modification? I would have thought it was too long to fit. - Nevin
No. Soundtraxx made one specifically for the 2-10-0.

We have two people at the club with the Soundtraxx systems. The sound is ok, rather quiet. I believe it could be improved with a little more work.
No they aren’t. They are worse than, than, than anything I can think of comparing them too. One would be better off making choo choo choo sounds with their mouth, and blowing a plastic toy whistle.
Soundtraxx made a unit for the 2-10-0! Must have missed it. Neither Loy’s nor Tony’s mention it. I’ll have to look on Ebay. - Nevin
The Soundtraxx LC decoder (steam) also fits easily with a bit of soldering and sounds great too.

looking at photos of the 2-10-0 i’m guessing it comes with the small tender . if so you can use my method http://www.trains.com/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=59242 to install a Tsunami or any other sound decoder . of course you’ll want to be more careful about wiring up the lights [:D]
