I will be in Louisville for business from Nov 5th. thu Nov 16th. and would like to find some MRR activities or find some railfanning activities to do. Some ideas would be MR clubs, someone willing to have a visitor over to look or operate their layout, MRR shows or good spots that are SAFE for railfanning. I’m willing to travel within 30-45 mins of Louisville. I remeber there used to be a club that met during the week. I think they were ther KSONS…not sure. Would like to hook up with this club too. Also does anyone know of any good hobby shops that offer a good MRR inventory. Thanks much!
Hi,
I worked and finished school in Louisville in the late '60s and have been back there recently. The L&N ran right next to the Durkee Refinery (where I worked) at 1300 Shelby. I was there when the huge boxcars started to become common, and spent a lot of time at the tankcar load/unload facilities. There were no significant hobby shops there at that time.
My recent trip back I found the Durkee Refinery was literally GONE, and of course the L&N and the frequent trains are history too. Regarding hobby shops, try Scale Reproductions at 3073 Breckinridge Lane 502-459-5849 and if you have time, drive up to Elizabethtown and visit the Hobby Station at Houchens E-Town Plaza 270-737-2000.
Hope it works out for you - and let us know too!

The KY Railway Museum in New Haven amy be slightly too far away. About an hour. They have L&N 4-6-2. C&O 2-8-4, Monon BL2, and several other interesting items. Also, The Old Kentucky Dinner Train is based in Bardstown. The CSX (Old L&N) line upgrade to Elizabethtown may be worth watching.
Thanks for passing the inof on the hobby shops along. I have been to Scale Reproductions and they are great to visit there and helpful on finding something to do for railroad enthusiaists such as myself. I was hoping maybe to find some home layouts in the area to visit too. Thanks again.
Mike
