I applied to MAAS cream to some of my track and it worked great but there were some issues with the stuff getting on the ties and sides of the rails. Has anyone used a Center-line or other track cleaning car to apply this so that it only ends up on the tops of the rails? Can you poli***he rails with one after the polish is applied? - Nevin
THIS is one the GURU (and chief stockholder ) of MAAS will hopefully enlighten us on.
Chuck? I disqualify myself.
When applying the metal polish you want to put the polish on an old piece of HO cork or Homasote. This way it is fairly stiff and the polish will only go onto the rail heads and not get down on the ties.
Getting the polish on the ties shows that you are trying to move too fast or are putting too much polish onto the cork.
This method is not the quickest way to do things but not ever having to do it again (as in) only cleaning your rails once in 3 years would be reason enough to take your time.
Using a cleaning car will not do a good job as does putting it on by hand. You will be able to feel when the cork gets dry and apply more polish. With the cleaning car (which does not do a good job - other wise why do you have to keep on using it time and again!) will just cake up with dirt that is being removed from the rails and then end up doing a P*** poor job and you will complain that the metal polish does not do as many on the forums have said it will do.
This is one time, doing it by hand gets the job done right!

My father-in-law used, and passed to me, a chunk of 2x2 lumber that you can wrap a t-shirt (disposable…) around to use as an applicator and polishing cloth.
