I have recently applied with NS for a conductor’s position in Macon, GA. I have friends who work for NS, but all were hired through the old hiring session route, not through the online app like they do now. The question I have is how long after you apply can you expect to hear something? If they do not accept your application, do they let you know one way or another? Also, concerning the positions listed for the different terminals: do these reflect actual openings, or are they just taking apps to get a pool of names for when an opening comes up at that location? Thanks in advance for the help.
Well, now I know: got the invite to an interview…woohoo! Now, can anyone tell me what working out of Brosnan Yard is like? LOL.
Congrats and Best Wishes.

how long did it take you to get called? I am trying to get on in Columbus. And what is the personality test like? How do you pass that thing?
been to one didn’t make it through past the testing but was fun and learned a lot
It took me about a month from the initial application to get called to the session in macon, which I didn’t get, and then anoth month and a half after that to get called to savannah, which I did get a conditional offer for. The personality test is 200 and something true and false questions; there is no pass or fail…either you agree or disagree with the question, and your personailty is what determines that…no way to study for who you are, LOL.
i took one for csx and it said i was too outgoing. can’t say you like to go places and hunt and fish and stuff. you have to like to stay at home and wait for the phone to ring. good luck on that offer. hope it goes well for you. i too put in for savannah last week but i am really hoping for columbus. thanks for the response
One other thing to work on that I didn’t know or think about until the Savannah session: they always tell you about one of the requirements is being able to pick up and change an 85 lb. coupler knuckle…well, in Savannah I was told that a surprising number of folks fail at school because they can’t pass the “hang” test, where you have to stand on a ladder simulating the side ladder on a freight car and hold your body weight at arms length with one hand, simulating holding on with one hand while you signal or talk on the radio with the other. You have to be able to do this for a minimum of 90 seconds, and unless you’re already buff as h*** (I’m not, but am in pretty good shape), it’s not as easy as it sounds; the first time I tried it my arm started shaking at about the 50 second mark, because it was simply not a position I was used to being in, but it is something you will have to do successfully before you can be put on moving equipment. Just something to think about.
