Are the EMD SD 40s the most produced locomotive?

Good morning all.

As I browse the rail pictures. net it seems to me that the SD40s are the mot prevalent of any of the other types. I am including anything with the EMD 40 designation.

Anyone have an idea if that is true?

There were over 1200 SD40’s produced. The follow-on SD40-2 resulted in almost 4000 units. The current GE ES44AC units are at the 5000 unit level right now, and it is still in production. The SD40-2 has always been the ‘yard stick’ other locomotives are measured against. Even now, one will hear that 3 of our new units are equal to 5 SD40-2’s. During the 1970’s, locomotive sales were dominated by the SD40-2.

The key is how many variants you include. If you add SD40 and SD40-2 you have about 5200 units. But if you add F3, F7 and F9 you have over 6000 units. The SD40-2 just edges out the F7 A-B by a few units.

You can Google the engine types and see the totals.

If they keep producing the SD70 variants they will outnumber the SD40-2 in another 5 years or so.

Are we including NS SD-40Es that were down graded to SD-40-2 (i think) standards.

I was thinking of all of the SD 40 number.

The Evolution Series has reached 5,000, but I don’t think the ES44AC alone has. I don’t know of the total ES44AC production, but I think it is around 3,000. Are we restricting this to just North America? The Russian TE10 reached almost 8,000 units.

Just North America and the EMD Locos that carry a SD 40 designation of any kind.
