Are Walthers 28" metal wheelsets of good quality?

I’ve been searching far and wide for 28" metal wheelsets for my articulated Impack intermodel set, and have finally found some. They’re made by Walthers Cornerstone, but they’re out of stock till June.

Are they of good quality? Can any of you recommend a good place to buy 28" metal wheelsets that I won’t have to wait until June for? I’d really like to have my Impacks operating for April when I’m holding an operating session…

I see they have the plastic axles. I’d stay away from them if you can wait and get better wheelsets.Keep what you have for now and see about getting some Intermountain or better wheelsets.

ExactRail makes them

That should work perfectly, Alex! Too bad I need 26, and the package comes with 12… Two packages leaves me with 24… I’ll have to buy three packages and have 10 left over…

you might want to consider Jaybee wheels. See http://www.greenwayproducts.com/a_wheelset.shtml (you’ll have to scroll down). Unfortunately you will still have to purchase more than what you need.

I think kadee makes them. I’m not sure if kadee axles and wheels are plastic or not. (sure look like it’s all plastic, but people say it’s metal)

Kadee uses metal wheels and plastic axles. Kadee trucks are metal, so the plastic bearing surface in the metal truck works OK.

I have Kadee wheels in my Athearn Impack car. Rolls a little better than stock, but still does not roll well. Might have to look into Intermountain wheels.

I’ll probably go with the Jaybee’s or Kadees. I’m not looking for better rolling-ness, mostly getting rid of the dirt-spreading plastic wheels.

Jaybees are more expensive than exactrail [;)]

I have a truck reamer you may wish to use on your trucks in case you want them to roll better.

True… I’ll calculate the cost and see what’s cheapest… You can bring the truck reamer tomorrow/Thursday… Check your email about that…
