I try not to buy anything tha doesn’t have a purpose on the layout. Sometimes the use is a stretch.
I collect delapatated and Gorie brass steamers
I collect (and run)
-
UP MOW cars - snow plows, wreck cranes, etc
-
1/87 autos - Ricko has come out with a few beauties lately!
-
Old time sets (DeWitt Clinton, John Bull, the Prussia, etc by Bachmann)
-
Just about anything else UP that I can afford (no brass)[:D]
I try to collect Alco loco’s , love those smokey old things. But they are run on the layout as well.
I’m not. When I stopped modelling US prototype, I got rid of everything - locos, cars, buildings, books, photos, and magazines. Some of my modeller mates suggested hanging on to one or two items as keepsakes, but I couldn’t see the point. If I can’t run it on my current layout, I don’t want it.
Cheers,
Mark.
Using that definition none of my would be collections - I just have accumulations along a theme.
Oh yeah, I also collect gargoyles (big real sized ones). Don’t have a real big collection, but they pretty hard to come across…
I’m a sucker for wood sheathed billboard reefers. Just love the look of them.

I confess to being a collector. I but stuff that I can not use and never intend to use just because I like them. I have way to much stuff, a lot of passenger cars that will never be used and a couple of big boys that will just stand there, gathering dust.

Guess I’m a sucker for those Wally World 55 Chevy’s and Caddies must have found 20-30 of each. Figure to retire rich off them in a few years.
I collect to operate.
I have a large collection of diesels and about 15 steam engines. I didn’t buy them just to have them, but I bought them to run them and to display them. When I assemble a freight or passenger consist, I can go to the display case and see what engine I would like to have to pull it.

Thanks for the memories. You took me way back with that photo. I think there might be one or two hidden under something in the house or the old one back home. I dont remember. They were most definately child played with and not pristine as yours.
Brakie, thanks for the Ma and Pa Boxcar Photo. That tells me that the facility that they have near York must be doing well with building boxcars these days.
I dont “Collect” however the boxes in the corner are a mute testamony to a railroad yet to be completed. Soooo… they are collected until they can be used due to limited run, out of production etc. I have a policy of buying them when I see them at the store because they will not be there next time I visit.
I “accumulate” N scale billboard reefers and boxcars, but will start to run them when the layout reaches running conditions. I “collect” Die cast vehicles which can be seen at the following: www/kingscountynet.com/diecastduck/index.htm They sit on the shelf for me to look at, hence a “collection”
