Aristo-Craft 2-8-0 Consolidation

A few modelers have e-mailed me asking about the gauge of the wheels on this loco. Our review sample’s wheels are gauged within standards and stay on the track without issue. There have been documented reports of locos with wheels gauged too wide, which would cause the locomotive to fall off the track. It’s unknown how widespread this problem may be, but the manufacturer is aware of the issue. If your locomotive exhibits this behavior, it’s advised to contact the manufacturer for resolution.

Great article about the model. There is a 2-8-0 Consolidated in operation on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. It is used weekly during their excursion season. It climbs the mountain between Cumberland and Frostburg, Maryland. It is Western Maryland # 734 which is the same number used by Aristo-craft on their model of the Western Maryland Consolidated.

Appreciate the specifications, particularly the operating radius, but would like to see weight added. This would help enthusiasts calculate battery power requirements vs train length. With respect to the front coupler, do any after-market (e.g. Kadee) satisfy the cow catcher situation. The gentleman from Virginia is correct in that the locomotive on the Western Maryland Scenic is marked witH a WM # but the engine is not of WM origin.

I have two 2-8-0’s in order to mount the front coupler i had to notch the cow-catcher. Literaly salvage the peices i cut out. Then with some liquid weld and apoxy I formed a plate at the bottom of the notch were the coupler passes through. Looks good and every thing works fine

Thanks for the review. It’s nice to see Aristo come up with something between their 0-4-0 and 2-8-2. Maybe they’ll come up with an Atlantic, since many of them used almost the same boilers and cabs.

BTW, how heavy is the thing?
