ARR is getting new SD70-MAC's

I noticed an order for four more SD70MAC for the Alaska Railroad and read on Trainorders that two of them were in Chicago in transit.

Does anyone know why they can purchase SD70MAC for Alaska but the SD70Ace are used in the lower 48???/ I know the SD70Ace are Tier II, but I had read that the older units could not be sold after 2006 and it would make sense they are under the same rules.

Being a Class II railroad the ARR cut a deal with the EPA, they were allowed to purchase a locomotive that is only Tier I compliant as long as they eliminated enough older locomotives to keep the total fleet annual emissions the same as if the new locomotives had been Tier II compliant. This is part of the reason the GP49s went bye bye.

Thanks for the reply. I photographed some of their motive power back in 1994 while was in Alaska. The new MAC’s look very good.

The difference between Tier I and Tier II is probably not worth talking about since the same engine is used with different Engine management software and radiator size for cooling.

I believe they have the new Phase II hood with the same windows as the standard SD70M. The Union Pacific received several of the new type of hood with the last series. The picture of the SD70M on the web site below has the same type of nose as the SD70MAC. This was a later version for the last SD70M’s with certain options.

No they don’t have that style of nose, they have the Isolated cab so the nose is the earlier style. The same as all SD70MACs built with the Isolated Cab.

I was wondering about that thread title. Someone was building an SD7MAC? That would sure have been a delving into some elder technology… [8D] wonder what a conversion would look like?
