Art vs Graffiti

My wife wanted to check out the “Earth Day” street party Sunday, so we went. I didn’t find it interesting: Grateful Dead like band, skateboarders. and a guy wearing a polar bear suit with a “save me” sign. There were lots of vendors selling trinkets.

One booth had some t-shirts which caught my eye. There was a neat boxcar cartoon:

I asked the vendor about it and she said the artist “paints trains.” I immediately equated “painting trains” with tagging, i.e. graffiti. I replied with an “Ohhhhhh!” and left. I didn’t want to get into an argument about his art being vandalism. Shame. I like the t-shirt was was going to buy it. It was only $10.

That sounds a lot like the May-Fest celebration that’s held here every year.

If you liked it you should have bought it. Why pass judgement on the guy? I assume you felt he would turn around and buy paint to tag cars with. He could also use that cash to feed his family or buy paint for legitimate causes.

As for Art vs Graffiti, It is all Art, it just depends on who’s eyes your looking through.

EDIT

BTW, for those that didn’t catch it, car in the pic on post one says “Evolve” (the threes are what one would call “leet speak” or l33t sp33k (tons of different ways of doing it really)

Being that I live in Da’ Bronx, NY I’d say this…

Good graffiti is art. Bad is just that, bad.

Well so far it’s been civil. Anyway while I don’t condone tagging railroad cars I do find graffiti murals interesting to look at.

I’m biting my tongue![xx(] I’m biting my tongue![xx(] I’m biting my tongue![xx(]

Maybe she just meant “the artist paints pictures of trains” ?? Like on t-shirts ?? [%-)]

Sorry, I’m locking this. Every graffiti thread I’ve ever seen turns into an argument.
