Articles/Series on Brewery...

With there no Magazine index anymore, I need to ask does anyone know what issues of MR had a detailed description of a Brewery, what kind of cars were delievered and for what purpose, etc. IIRC, it was a very detailed article. I want to say it covered the Seagram’s (sp?) plant, but I could be mistaken

Thanks!

Ken L

The article you’re thinking of is this:

Model Railroader - March 2001
“From barrels to bottles - A model Seagram’s bottling plant provides a destination for tank cars”
By Jim Hediger

I seem to recall, though, that it’s not really a brewery (where beer is brewed), but rather it is a bottling plant for a distillery (for spirits–whiskey, rum, gin, etc.).

If you want to go with an actual brewery, you ought to take a look at the book The Model Railoader’s Guide to Industries Along the Tracks 2, by Jeff Wilson, and published by Kalmbach.

It has a chapter about the brewing industry with all kinds of great information: brief history, description of the brewing process, types of cars used, charts for calculating quantities of materials/numbers of of cars, and even a sample trackplan.

Thanks. Do you know if the book you mention is a “new” article, or is it just a reprint of an earlier MR article?

Ken L.

It’s all new material, not a reprint. It’s also a bit lengthier than what you’d find in a typical MR article…more text, photos, and charts.
