can I just lay the mainline and then fill in where the switches go & other things?

Yes. In fact, it’s a pretty good idea, so long as you’re not gluing down your track. Get the mainline up and running, and then slowly worl out where you want passing sidings, spurs, yards, etc. Getting the mainline up and running will keep the motivation levels high, because you’ll be able to run trains right away. I’m working towards getting my long mainline finished before the end of the year, so I can play trains without having to put in any work!
guess I got frustrated on where I want this switch & that,… & by doing the mainline… it has helped me clear up some road blocks…
