Assembling an Athearn Genesis SD75M

I purchased a new old stock Athearn Genesis G6137 SD75M a while ago, and since I bought the drills required for the assembly yesterday, I want to get on with it. Should I paint the handrails and other metal parts? If so, is there a certain kind of paint I should use (acryl, enamel, lacquer) and/or a certain brand of paint that matches the Santa Fe red and yellow shade? Or should I mix paint myself and try to match the colors? I only have access to Tamiya paint for plastic assembly kits.

Guards Red is a pretty good match for the red.I used Tamiya Yellow too!

glad to hear tamiya yellow works. i have one in my cabinet.

nice model! O scale?

Yes Lionel;!

How should I remove the shell from the chassis? I want to sweep out the debris from the drilling and glue the bars in place.

The TCS site has a handy reference for how to get into the guts of many locomotives:

Good Luck, Ed

Thanks! The TCS website is a very good place to take a look at the wiring and stuff.
