Assembly Question on Walthers 2908

Got yet another question for my forum friends: I purchased a replacement for my existing Walthers Diesel Fueling Facility (# 2908). For some reason the old one became unusable (That’s not the reason for my question.).

In step 5, the instructions indicate that for an older facility to use the walkways and for a modern facility to not use them (just insert regular track). For some reason, I seem to remember that I was told that those instructions were backwards. I had this problem when I assembled the first one and I can’t seem to completely remember the answer. (With the old one the middle walkway was used but not the two outside ones.)

As usual, any help the forums can provide will be most welcomed.

I recently placed a 933-2908 fuel facility in an area of my layout. I kitbashed the parts and mixed in parts from the sanding towers, along with some parts from a Woodland Scenics D232 Diesel Fuel Facility kit.

I read the Walthers instruction sheet and it seems like they DO have step 5 backwards.

Essentially they should have said that a modern facility would have the rails anchored to the concrete and an older facility would have track, with ties, laid directly on the ground with no spill-collection basin per EPA regs.

I already had track in place so I cut the platforms away and didn’t use the base plate as such.

Good Luck, Ed

That’s goes along with what I remember. It just was too many years ago for me to be certain on that detail.

I went with dual flextrack between the 3 platform sections. I used stripwood from Hobby Lobby as 2x lumber planking with the track. Four strips fit nicely between the rails and one strip on the outside. Here’s a photo:
