I am considering buying a DCC Equipped HO Scale Bachmann Chessie System GP40 for a detail and patch job. I just wanted your feedback on this new line of Bachmann’s. By all standards, I am not a rivet counter. Just to let you know[tup].
In my opinion, it looks like a really good deal. You can get one for well under 50 bucks. My guess is that it has running characteristics similiar to athearn Blue box engines. The grab irons may be molded in, but they could easily be shaved off. Hope this helps[:D]
The GP50 I have (don’t ask), runs okay, it is not an Atlas or Kato, but equal to an Athearn BB. Detail wise, it is not any different from those of 10-20 years ago. They are a bargin. Trainworld has them for less than $30.
I believe the DCC equipped version and analog versions in some road names have a metal chassis, flat can type motor, and dual flywheels. They run just as good if not slightly smoother than the Athearn ‘blue box’ GP40s.
Then there are the junky toy-like Bachmann GP40s with the plastic frames and single powered trucks which are sold separately but are usually sold with train sets. These locos are good for stomping on and nothing more.
