Does any one know what the part number is for the NWSL drive gear for the 2-8-2 Athearn Steam Locomotive. I have 2 of these engines and both jave cracked drive gears. Also, does Athearn make replacement gears? Thanks
Athearn never did answer my numerous inquiries about a replacement gear for the 2-8-2 Mikado. Other forum members allegedly received free replacements from Athearn, but I never could even purchase one from them. By the time I found out they were available, they had sold out and no more are ever anticipated.
I can’t answer your question about the NWSL gear, but if you download their catalog and have a digital caliper, you can count the number of teeth, measure the gear’s outside diameter, width, and shaft diameter, and perhaps find one from their listings.

I’m still trying to decipher NWSL’s gear specifications so I can order a replacement for a Bachmann G-scale 2-8-0 Consolidation, which has the same cracked gear problem as the Athearn Genesis Mikado.
Just call NWSL and tell them what you want. They’ll know.
NWSL makes both the axle gears and the idler gears. It looks like the axle gear is still in stock. Hope this helps!
