Which one? The old standard BB SD40-2 or the one with the improvements like the corrugated grills? Q-fans? Snoot? Chicken wire? Regardless you can buy new ones on line for $40.00 and the new RTR with the scale handrails and hex drive line for $55.00…So a use one should fetch no more then $15.00 to $20.00 depending on condition…Of course if its in poor shape-missing handrails and detail parts then $10.00 tops.
seems to be in good shape but you can get one that looks and runs better for not too much more. I would stop at $25.
The new Bachmann Spectrum SD45 is nice and you can find it on ebay for $30-$40 if you wait a little while. These are nice engines, they are DCC ready and run and look at least as good as a P2K.
If you are planning to convert it to a SOU unit it would be easier to start with a Kato SD40-2 or maybe wait and see whether the soon to be released Bachmann SD40-2 has a removeable low nose. I have converted the Athearn and it is somewhat difficult to cut off the short low hood and leave enough material to attach the cannon high hood to.
Thanks for the tip modlerbob. I was actually thinking of doing that, but now i’m not so sure. I just got a P2K GP30, that I wat to convert to a high hood, and I want to try on something not so exepensive. Maybe i’lll just buy a kato Sd40-2 shell.
Be aware, that Kato shells aren’t cheap. For example, an HO scale EMD F40PH shell is $35. An undec Athearn shell is much cheaper, and can usually be picked up at any hobby shop.
Be aware that if you start w/ a decorated Kato shell and plan to strip the paint, you could destroy the very thin shell. Many have melted/ wrecked them. The Athearn SD40-2 is a great starting point and very easy to strip paint if needed.
Brakie, Darth is actually right about the SD40-2 being longer than the SD40.
The SD40 used the older Flexicoil trucks, whereas the SD40-2 uses the newer HTC trucks. The HTC trucks have a traction motor yoke that sticks out on one end of the truck, which means the overall dimensions of the HTC truck is longer. That’s why the SD40-2 has a frame that is about 3 feet longer than the SD40 so it can accomodate the HTC truck and still have the same length fuel tank.
I don’t think an SD40 shell will fit on an SD40-2 mechanism… Unless you extend the “porches”.
