Athearn Blue Box parts

I am trying to locate a suplly of Athearn Blue Box HO gauge locomotive handrail sets. I contacted Athearn this week and they told me that they only stock parts for their ready to run equipment. I am looking for sets for their SD40T-2, SD40-2, and GP7 locomotives. I’ve been checking Ebay for them and can only find the plastic ready to run handrail sets, which Athearn’s representative told me are not compatible with the blue box locomotives. Thanks.

This place does after market sets. They have the 3 locos your looking for listed. From what I’ve heard, these are nicer than the stock sets.

Try searching again and make sure to check in the “buy it now” listings.

This one took about 2 minutes to find.

There are two things with what Athearn has said.

First, I have asked Athearn about SD40-2 metal handrail sets, and they said they have the most of any model in stock. Check their website, where you can order all of their parts.

Second, plastic handrails DO fit the Blue Box engines, if that’s where they came from. Example: One of my BB GP38-2s has a plastic GP38 handrail set on it, as does one of my SD40-2s.

I have found certain Athearn reps more knowledgable than others…depends on when you call.

Here is a link to an ebay auction that has a set of metal SD40-2 handrails. I’ve dealt with this seller before and he is a good seller, ships fast and is honest. You might want to contact him to see if he has any more sets, if you need more than one. He may also have the GP-7 (GP-9) handrails as well, doesn’t hurt to ask.

Here is another sellers’ link to some GP-7/9 handrails, but they are a bit pricey, might want to see if they can cut you a price deal.

Good luck.
