Athearn body shells painted?

I plan on buying a replacement shell for my blue box GP60. Do the replacement shells come painted or will I need to paint it myself?

If you’re ordering directly from Athearn it’s the bare, unpainted or “undecorated” shell. No handrails, numberboard or headlight lenses are included.

If you haven’t already, check out www.athearn.com

I did check out the Athearn site, and it was some help [:)]

As far as ordering it, I’ll be ordering it through my local hobby shop…

I suppose painting the shell will be good experience… :expressionless:

But I still need to know:

• Does the “parts bag” include the numberboard and lenses?

• what is the part number for the truck sideframes? I don’t see them listed on the site.

I have the handrails and dynamic brake, but that’s all :expressionless:

My GP60 instruction sheet does not list numbers for the sideframes, however it does list a Sideframe set (46036) that includes 4 each of sideframes, brake cylinders, swing hangers, and shock struts. Athearn is usually helpful if you e-mail them, you might want to check on availibility. I don’t know about the parts bag.

Thanks for the sideframe set number [:D] I guess I’ll order that, the shell, and the parts bag, which is bound to include parts I’ll be thankful later on for buying (<-- has a tendency to destroy small pieces) [;)]

Jwaldo,

Hope you don’t mind the curiosity.

What type of paint will you be using and which roadname will you be refinishing your locomotive in?

Cheers!

Not at all! [;)]

What type of paint will you be using

I don’t know yet [B)]

SP or Rio Grande

UNPAINTED.

I used to order Athearn ‘Dummy’s’ to get a painted shell. The price was cheap enough that i’d just throw away the chassis. If you want custom painting, $100 to $150 per engine is current pricing, and cost of aquiring painting equipment - pressurized Tank, ventilation box, etc - is BIG bucks.

My original plan was to buy a dummy unit, use it’s shell, and put the old shell on the dummy chassis for the scrapyard, but I can’t find a dummy GP60 anywhere :frowning: As for painting, I have a basic airbru***hat will get the job done. It’s putting decals on that bothers me. It’s something I’m notoriously bad at [xx(]
