Has anyone seen these online for sale anywhere? I recently got back in to HO and want another Chessie engine so I figured what the heck, I’ll get an oddity. Hopefully it hasn’t been too long since they came out.
Thanks for any information!

Well, there is “no image available”, but did you mean something like this one: http://www.trainworldonline.com/catalog/category/detail.php?id=17324&back_url=%2Fsearch.php%3Fq%3Dac4400%26x%3D38%26y%3D9 ?
This is the one I am looking for. I haven’t ever seen one for sale anywhere…
It may also be a C44-9W. I have seen different sites listing different types for the others in this series of whimsical designs.
You do realize that this never existed… The newest/ largest diesel in Chessie paint is an SD50!
Yeah I know, I want a couple of those too! But these Athearn things are a nice interpretation of what they could look like if they were around today. Mostly it is a random desire but I havent seen any of them at shows or online to judge my craving on.
Neither did these CR GP60Ms but, they’re nice lookers just like that Chessie fantasy unit…
Gotta have some fun or in my case I like to hear the CR purist howl.[(-D]
Brakie, That really does look great in CR paint, Might look good in Chessie too! That Chessie “Rock Pilot” would be fun to add to that, Hmm, Anti climber and rock pilot- long centerset for sure…
Ther are still quite a few P2K SD50’s out there to be had. I already have the 2 C&O and 1 B&O and an extra one for future parts/ replacement. Last show we had a few out w/ some of the dealers. DCC ready ones ranged from $50-$75
Those shots look great bogp40! I am thinking about grabbing at least one of those at the next show around here in September. I appreciate the information.
The loco in question is a GE AC4400CW. Athearn also made them in a Milwaukee fantasy scheme, which I completely forgot I wanted a few of. Thumbing through my spotters guide the equipment box on the conductors side of the 400 was larger due to housing the AC traction equipment, and the spotter guide also notes the addition of vents placed under the cab side windows for the air conditioning unit.
I know I said I want a unit or two in the MILW fantasy scheme, but I think I might try to track down a Chessie unit or two also. They look just as grand.
Those MILW are nice due to their simplicity. No crazy paint schemes or anything. While you are rooting around, let me know if you find anything!
Conrail actually ordered GP60Ms (with insulated cabs, would have been GP60i’s). But switched the order to SD80 Macs to take advantage of the AC traction motor technology. So that unit is not as much a fantasy as some might think.
As for the Athearn locos, I imagine the fantasy units were run in very small numbers. I really don’t remember seeing any at shows.
