Does any one know what dcc decoder will fit into a Athearn SW7 switcher? I’ve tried a MRC one but couldn’t get the shell back on. Also, will that decoder work with MRC dcc?
As long as the decoder is NMRA compatable there should be no problems with the decoder working with your MRC system. Have you tried putting an N gauge decoder in the loco? Being smaller they may fit better inside the shell.

would an N scale decoder have enough amps to run the athearn?

I installed a TCS m-1 decoder in my SW-1500. It is listed as an N scale decoder but works fine on HO power levels. It is very small and the shell fit back on nicely.
Most N (and even most Z) scale decoders can handle 1 amp these days, which should be sufficient for your Athearn switcher.
has any one put a decoder into a Walthers Alco FA 1?
the motor as a metal case which touches the frame
You’d have to isolate the motor from the frame first, using silicon or electrical tape.
mgruber,
A Digitrax DZ123 decoder should fit in your switcher. I put one in a Thomas The Tank Engine with room to spare. Check the Digitrax site (link below) and check the specifications for their decoders. I’m sure they will have one that will fit.

Digitrax is not the only manufacturer that makes small decoders, just the one I am most familiar with. I also have MRC Sound decoders, Soundtraxx and Lenz decoders installed in my equipment. Check as many manufacturers sites as you can to get what you need.
A call or e-mail to Tony’s Train Exchange will get you advice from experts. They have always been very helpful to me.

Again, check with the manufacturers to find what you want and then go to one of the ‘expert’ suppliers to confirm it.
Hope this helps.
