So far, we are all speculating, so there is no definitive answer yet.
Mister Beasley did a conversion once on an Athearn F7, so maybe he will chime in on this, although I cannot say for sure which frames and shells he used in the conversion.
The answer lies in the dimension and configuration of both the BB frame and the Genesis frame. Are they the same?
If I’m not mistaken that was putting Hi-F Athearn body on a blue box drive. Not much of a conversion there. Except for maybe cutting a hole in the pilot to make use of the coupler pad on the blue box frame it’s a snap on installation. With a B unit it just snaps on.
You said you installed LED lights in your Genesis ABBA set, will the A shell, fit on the B chassis?
The BB Athearn A&B F7 chassis’s are the same, but you can’t completely, take the shell off, the A without removing the front coupler. That’s how they are on my Athearn F7’s…
Good question, but I don’t know the answer. I never tried it. My guess is that the B shell will fit on the A frame, but not sure that the A shell will fit on the B frame,
P.S. The Athearn BB frame is the same for the A and the B unit. And the part number is different from the part numbers on the Genesis A frame and B frame.
Ding Ding Ding,we have a weener!!! [:O] C’mon fellas, twas not that long ago when I remember buying Highliner shells and slapping them on BB Chassis with no modifications. And yes, Athearn bought the Highliner tooling for the Genesis line. Then when Stewart brought out their Kato built chassis, I swapped those shells onto Stewart chassis. Had to buy the Stewart glass to secure the shells. I’ve still got an AB set like that.
Does knowing this make me the old fart in the room??[^o)]
The OP asked, “Will an Athearn blue box F7A or F7B shell fit on an Athearn Genesis F7A or F7B frame?”.
So, if Genesis shells fit on BB frames, is it fair to assume that BB shells fit on Genesis frames? Seems so, but no one has stated that emphatically so far.
I’m currently running an A-B set of Athearn “bluebox” F7’s on my layout. The B unit uses a regular bluebox chassis and motor, the A unit uses an Athearn Genesis chassis / motor. Either shell (A or B) fits on either chassis with no modification needed except perhaps adding or removing the headlight bulb. The chassis of both kinds are designed to fit either A or B units. Highliner shells also fit either the bluebox or Genesis chassis.
