HI ALL. HAS ANYONE ELSE PURCHASED THE NEW ATHEARN GENESIS SD45-2 AND SD60M AND HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE WORM GEAR SHAFT MOVING UP AND DOWN BY ABOUT AN 1/8 OF AN INCH. CAUSING IT TO BE REALLY NOISY.
AND THE NEW MODELS ARE USING READY TO ROLL TRUCKS, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE GENESIS LINE
Ian.
I think the Genesis line is ready to roll probably because no one liked having to put the Genesis kits together. At least me. The reason for problem may be because of the gearing. You might want to try checking for any flash as the blue box line had that recurring problem.
Also check to make sure the worm shaft bearings are in place. I got an Athearn once that was missing one and the worm shaft moved around just as you describe.
wyomingrailfan, he means it uses the trucks from the Ready To Roll/Blue Box drives. It was probably because they didn’t want to have to make brand-new trucks and sideframes when they already had a proven design and well detailed sideframes for it.
Is the worm/truck retainer snapped all the way down? If it is and the worm is still free to move up and down, add some shims between the worm bearing and retainer, until it’s working like you want it.
Hello Darth, I’ve since found that the worm housings aren’t the correct shape, as though they’ve been mis-cast or softened by non plastic compatable oil.
I’am going to get myself a few new ones…
