athearn gp38-2 lights

thanks, i thought this forum would help me, i guess not, not everyone is a pro, guess i’m supposed to go out BUY another book$$$$$$.

some of us go “baby steps”, and don’t have a whole lots of $$$$$$ to keep buying books etc.! like i said before i’m new to detailing and i think i’ve done a good job for my first time, all i wanted to know is there a way to mount, what kind of light, etc for a headlight on the low nose{front} of an athearn gp38-2. i am very challenged in this area, ps its DC

Slooow down! Evidently nobody that might be able to help saw your previous post(s). If you watch this forum, you may notice that topics get buried pretty quickly and many of us only go back a page or two.

Now to your loco. I’m assuming this is an older blue box athearn. You have a few different option for lights.

First of all you would need to choose a light source and type of lighting. Do you want to use LEDs or incandescent lights. If you want constant intensity (and reversing) lighting, you will need some type of circuit to accomplish this, (it can be purchased or you can build it).

Miniatronics has some nice microbuilbs that you can use directly in each headlight hole. The wires can be attached the underside of the nose with hot glue or CA with enough slack to adjust or aim the light bulbs. These bulbs are 1.5v and you will need to use some kind of voltage dropping device such as I previously described.

How are we doing so far? Jay.

To add to what MM51 said…

Both GRS and Custom Finishing make constant lighting units. Miniatronics might have one as well–I didn’t see it mentioned in the Walthers catalog though. With a little effort, you could probably relocate the headlight on the low nose. Good luck!
