Athearn Hand Rail Question?

My son has an old Blue Box SD40T-2 (SP, not that it matters) and I am interested to know if the new plastic handrail sets would fit, or if the stanchion spacing is all different? The new hand rails that are available are no doubt for the more recent ready-to-run line of locos. Thanks for the input.

Simon, did you and Crisp get it running yet? It had sat for 4 years. Last night was the first time it had seen rails in the time.

Ken

The newer handrail should fit the older BB SD40T-2.IIRC a lot of guys used Athearn handrails on the RPP shell rather then making them or buying 'em.

Hi Ken, yes Crispy was running it by the end of the evening. It had a dead short in it, which turned out to be a pair of the wheels in one of the trucks were out of gauge, too narrow and touching in the center of the drive gear. I had never seen that before in a BB. Anyway, after solving that and a good cleaning it seems to be running just fine. Crispy is very happy with it. When looking for hand rails I discovered that it had been incorrectly labelled by who ever you got it from and that it is actually a SD40T-2.

Thanks Larry, that is useful information.

That would be me Simon. Far a the wheels being two narrow, seen it before. Might be cracked center gears with its age. I have some gears if you need them.

Ken

This wouldn’t happen without cracked gears? I have a Proto 2000 GP7 that had the same problem. Found it after tearing apart and rebuilding the entire locomotive, electronics and all, twice…

Yes it could happen if the gears are good Tyler. But most of the the the center gear will be cracked.

By the way Simon, how is the speed of the engine? I remember it being pretty slow compared to my other engines I had at the time.

Cuda Ken

It did not strike me as especially slow, but then I was running it on OO under DCC and DC locos always run slower in that setting. I am on the road for a couple of days but will try and slap a decoder in it next weekend and see how it runs. I am sure it will be fine.

BTW got the Big Boy out today and Andrew messed around with the CV’s and got it pulling a nice long train at speed step 1 at a total crawl. Not sure it would outdo your Y6b but not bad for an old Rivarossi either.

Bring it over next time Simon, love to see it again.
