Athearn heavyweight coaches: cal scale wheels good alternative?

I have a few athearn heavyweight coach kits which are missing their stock brakewheels. i am thinking of getting a pack of Cal-Scale passenger car brake wheels #190-487 to replace the missing athearn brakewheels. has anyone used the cal-scale brakewheels on athearn coaches?

While the Cal-Scale brake wheels are of a somewhat different style, they’ll probably look better than no brake wheel at all. You should be aware that the mounting pin moulded on to the back of the wheel is designed for use with the Cal-Scale Ajax gearbox, and is very of a small diameter. You’ll need to plug the hole in the Athearn car (styrene rod or a piece of plastic sprue of the proper diameter works well), then re-drill to accept the smaller part.
Tichy also offers a variety of brake wheels with their brake gear sets, although the mounting pin issue also comes into play.
You may be able to get replacement brake wheels directly from Athearn (Horizon).

I was going to suggest that you order them from Athearn, but all of their brake wheel sets are listed as “sold out.”

There are some Kadee brake wheels listed on e-Bay. Not sure if they would be what you’re looking for or if they will fit onto Athearn products.

There are several days to go on the auction.
