Athearn HO 200 ton wreck crane Bucyrus Erie - NEED OPERATING HANDWHEEL or CRANK

Can anyone help me find the operating handwheel or crank to operate the boom and hooks for this model? My 8 yr old son and I bought one for $2 and he really wants to play with it on the layout. I cant find pics of one tosee if I can make my own. Ill buy a complete car if needed.

Thanks

Keith

Keith,

If you have a set of small screwdrivers, one of the larger Phillips screwdrivers is what works great for me on my two cranes. They’re different (T-M MOW crane and Tichy big hook) kits, but I’m pretty sure they all use the same size operating sockets IIRC.

ok thanks. Good idea.

I’d like to know what these darn things origially lookd like.

Mine is close to 40 years old. It was a little over 1".long with two90 degree bends so you could turn it full circle. The end you stuck in the crane had a hallf round end to engage the part inside.

NDBPRR,

Thats helpful, was the outside shaft dimension big enough to hold it in the hole so it could stay in place? I assume so.

Thanks

Thanks for everyones help. I finally found what one looks like after the recent posts.

This will be easy to make. Much appreciated.

The crank is Athearn Part #17025. A fella in Wyoming has a good supply of Athearn parts and it looks like he has 4 of these cranks available. You can contact him at choochooareus@gmail.com.

With that description, maybe it was a flat-bladed mini screwdriver I used, instead of a Philips. The flat blade would give a better fit for a D-shaped hole.

Exactly. with that clue I took a further look at mine and realized it was a D shaped hole. This tool will be easy to make and as you say a proper small screwdriver will also work.
