My power pack suddenly went to full power and my Athearn Genesis UP 4-8-4 with sound, blasted down the track. After I turned the power off, now there is no sound, but the locomotive responds to the Athearn wireless remote control, as if nothing happened to the locomotive. Has anyone else experienced this condition and how was the problem fixed?
Did you try resetting the decoder?
I guess that I should have said that I am running only DC. I don’t have DCC controls or set-up.
If this is an older run model, it probably has an MRC decoder. These were absolutely horrible. Your best bet would be another brand. In all probability the decoder is the problem And highly doubtful that it’s fixable. Sorry.
Athearn first released the locomotive around 2005.
I don’t own any of these, but when I first saw the model, I was impressed by the detail on them, much better than Bachmann or Rivarossi!
Di you find a solution yet? The online manual says:
Sounds do not activate with transmitter all the time.
Check battery level, change if needed. Different atmospheric conditions and/or metal pipes, conduits, and screen wire scenery an cause range problems. Try holding the transmitter antenna close to or on one of the running rails if the locomotive is far away from you.

Thank you, but I have read the owners manual, changed the battery, held the remote close, but the sound is dead. The locomotive responds like it always has, with the Athearn remote, same speed control and there is just no sound. I think the decoder is either fried or needs replacing.
