Looks like the numbers on the front were not put on properly, from the photo. It is nice to see generic low priced steam locos available that will appeal to a large group readily available again. Add this in with some of the Spectrum and Broadway Limited offerings of smaller locos like 2-8-2, 4-6-2, and 2-8-0 types as well as the switchers 0-4-0, 0-6-0, and 0-8-0 types and a modeler with a small layout could put together a decent batch of locos and with some detail work could make them represent specific locos if desired. This is a win for the hobby and the hobbiest. Way to go Athearn uncle Irv would be proud.
Great to see new offerings of steam models thank you Athearn…

I would to use this 2-8-0 on our logging railroad in the Cloudcroft logging operations, in South central New Mexico. It would fit the time line just perfect up in the mountions.

Being that I do not run DCC, I am very interested in this locomotive as I won’t have to pay for the DCC upgrade and save a little. It will fit right in with my layout.

I would have thought that Athearn would have added extra detail to this engine. It is a plain
Jane model and while it is DCC ready it does not compare with the Bachmann DCC on board with far more detail and similar price.

Like most Horizon/Athearn offerings these days, overpriced!
I reckon for the value he offered when things were made in California ‘Uncle Irv’ is turning in his grave!

Despite the fact the 2-8-0 was so common, I’m still amazed at how limited the availability is of this engine. Although I’m glad Athearn is reissuing and updating the MRC original, I’d love to see more modern versions with sound.

I agree. Its great to see the 2-8-0 light Consolidation available again. Does anyone know how this version compares to the prototype Baldwin 2-8-0s that ran on the Ma&Pa as No.s 23,24,25,and 26? Thanks

While I like seeing Athearn come out with this engine, what I would really like to see is Athearn come out again with their Mikado and Pacific with improvements such as electrical pick up on the tender as well as all of the drivers, a coupling on the pilot as well as the back of the tender and cheaters (traction tires) on one set of the drivers or increasing the weight to over 15 ounces.

Would be great to also see a narrow gauge version (HOn3) of this old classic.
