I find the Athearn GP38-2 makes an excellent starting point for creating some exceptional scaled models. There are so many parts on the market to change it into whichever version you need. The mechanism is rugged and reliable out of the box but can be customized to run as smooth as an Atlas or Genesis locomotive.
I have one and it is my favorite locomotive
