Athearn, HO scale, UP 4-6-6-4 Challenger
This model was my first steam engine in HO scale, and while Challenger no. 3985 of the Union Pacific RR is still in for excursion service today, you may want to know how to operate this new model on your layout once you have it set up. The rear drivers of the rear engine have traction tires, and the Challenger can be perfect for passenger trains, too.

This loco is awsome I have one but my DC powerpack can’t handle the power it demands.It’s sitting in my dislay case on my dresser.AC6000 from BLI looks good too.

Just superb, like being at the throttle. Adding power for 2% hills to avoid stalling and listening to engine noise instead of just watching an overpowered loco. Can’t wait until I get the Big Boy and FEF3.

I would love to have a Challenger when I am older and have the money.And I love the detail and features the loco has.

I’ve owned several of them and feel that for the money you cant buy a better locomotive, albiet for the minor inaccuracies this is a very fine locomotive at a very reasonable price, other companies charge as much as 3 times what the Athearn Genesis line sells for , and I feel that the biggest flaw if you wanna call it that, is the MRC sound system has somewhat of a sub standard quality,but remember this loco listed for a mere $300 compared to MTH and Lionel who get a considerable amount more and to the best of my knowledge dont come with a wireless remote , the Genesis Challenger is a beautiful locomotive, GET ONE , or two , I did!
