Athearn Hustler

ah ah, its a little more than that. Bought it years ago, got the Ernst regear kit and then got the gas electric conversion kit. The shell is all metal and a plastic framing to fit. This little thing crawls vs its original rubberband drive thats notorious for 400 smph…

I have a test train and most my other engines pull it, however the sw switcher in view needs its calf to pull it. This little critter pulls the full string with ease at a nice switching pace. I will convert it to an electric loco with trolley pole or pantagraph. Its 4 wheel pickup seems AOK, I guess the extra weight is a benefit. Train is about 15 cars.

Sweet! Definitely not recognizable as a Hustler! Nice little switcher.

I’m in the process of installing the Ernst regear kit myself, and I was more than a little annoyed to discover that the flywheel/worm assembly was so tight on the motor shaft, that even with grease they pressed on off-center, even tho I followed the instructions to the letter. I’ve got them mostly straightened now, but there’s still a wobble that transmits vibration to the motor.

There was no reason to drill the brass worms out so undersized. It should have been a light friction fit that you could secure with CA if necessary. Someone told me it was a bear to install; now I know why.

Oh yeah… nice unit, Dinwitty. [:)][tup]
