Athearn ImPack Articulated

Good Morning Everyone!

I hope everybody had a merry Christmas!

I got a SP ImPack end and intermediates for one of my Christmas presents. I noticed the the wheels are plastic[:0]! I also saw that they are quite smaller than a typical 33 inch wheel. I would like to change out the grime grabbing plastics with good ol’ metal.

What size wheels do I need? Also where can I get them?

Thanks!

I have a set of those, too, and have just had to leave the plastic wheels on them.

That is not what I wanted to hear. Oh well. I wonder if I can modify any narrow guage wheel sets…Hmmm…If ya can’t fix it, modify it!

they are probabaly 28" wheels, intermountain makes them i do believe i think kadee might too.

NWSL and Jay-Bee have the 28" metal wheels that you need to convert the cars to metal wheels which will add some needed weight and improve the rolling qualities.

They are indeed 28in wheels - P2K offer these too. I’ve heard variable reports about these in Athearn cars, but the Athearn double stacks I’ve fitted with them seem to work pretty well - there’s a little “slop” in the bearings but not enough to cause problems.

I believe the wheels on the ends were 33" wheels, while the wheels on the intermediates were 28" wheels.

All my wheels are 28" I tried the 33" and the flanges rub on the male/female articulation hook up. 33" also made the coupler too high.

In my assembly, I packed the open space in the center beam full of moldable lead. I did not add any lead where the weight is mounted, though. They feel much better than before and seem pretty balanced.

Thanks for all the info guys!
